Abstract

This scholarly research aims to introduce Imam Al-Dailami (d. 444 AH) and Imam Al-Mawardi (d. 450 AH) while highlighting their consensus on mutawatir Quranic readings within their exegetical works, Al-Burhan and Al-Nukat wal-Uyun. It further underscores the academic significance, underlying sources, and foundational authority of these exegeses in Islamic studies. Methodologically, the study adopts an integrated approach combining descriptive, analytical, comparative, and historical inductive methods. This framework facilitates a rigorous analysis of the thematic areas where both scholars agreed or offered unique insights, supported by classical scholarly commentary. Structurally, the paper is organized into two distinct sections: the first introduces the two imams and their respective works, whereas the second systematically examines their consensus on mutawatir readings. The primary findings indicate that both scholars prioritized mutawatir readings, strictly limiting their analyses to the seven canonical readings rather than expanding to the ten. Both imams comprehensively articulated how these variant recitations influence linguistic, semantic, and interpretive dimensions of the text. However, a key methodological divergence was identified regarding attribution: while Imam Al-Mawardi consistently attributed readings to their specific canonical reciters, Imam Al-Dailami frequently employed passive constructions, such as "Quri'a" (it was read), without explicit attribution. Consequently, this study demonstrates the significant contribution of both classical scholars to Quranic exegesis.
