Imam AlAloosi's Approach regarding Isra’iliyyat in his tafsir

Abstract

The Isra’iliyyat or narrations and traditions from sources of Banu Israel, in tafasir is very famous from early generations. All the great tafasirs reported them with its unique approach. This study deals with the approach and stance of imam Mahmood al_ Aloosi an Iraqian nineteenth century famous mufasir in reporting the Isra’iliyyat in his famous tafsir namely “Rooh al-Maa’ni fi Tafsiri-l-Qurani-l-Azim wasab’u-l-Mathani”. This study presents primarily the meaning and concept of Isra’iliyyat and approach of mufasireen towards it, then it also sheds light on his life and methodology of tafsir briefly. At last, it highlights his analytical and critical approach towards Isra’iliyyat with some examples.
