Writing about prison as a horizon for affirming identity and a rebellion against the confiscation of humanity

Abstract

Writing about the prison experience is considered a form of resistance to human injustice, a confrontation with violations of dignity, and a defense of freedom. It also represents a rebellion against all that seeks to erase and humiliate the human self. From this perspective, prison—despite its darkness and tragedy—becomes a fertile space that has generated numerous creative works imbued with human and social significance, regardless of the political and ideological orientations of their authors. This study is grounded in a set of key questions, most notably: What is the significance of writing about the prison experience? How are vision and motivation for writing shaped within a space that constrains the creative self and undermines its dignity? It also seeks to examine the issue of the imprisoned writer’s credibility and the extent of their commitment to truth when reconstructing the daily realities of torture and abuse. In addition, it evaluates the effectiveness of such writings in affirming the authors’ identities in the face of oppressive authority and in liberating them from the burden of a dark past. The study concludes with several findings, most notably that prisoners have contributed to documenting their own experiences as well as those of others, producing creative texts that rise above pain and the monotony of waiting within a space dominated by confinement and human alienation. Writing thus becomes a means of narrating suffering and oppression, while highlighting human resilience in the face of the jailer’s violence. In this way, it transforms into an act of resistance that enables the writer to release their suffering and come to terms with the effects of a harsh experience.
