The Role of the Arab League towards the Crisis in Syria

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the role played by the League of Arab States in settling the Syrian crisis. The study relied on the descriptive approach as well as the historical approach to cite a number of historical events in which the Arab League made efforts in an attempt to find political solutions to the Syrian crisis. The most important results of the study were as follows: The Arab League did not make a real effort to try to find political solutions to the Syrian crisis since the first moments of the start of the popular protests in Syria, but six months after the outbreak of the crisis it sent its Secretary-General. The role of the League of Arab States in the Syrian crisis was embodied by a number of decisions, initiatives and statements, the most important of which was Statement 148 of the Council of the Arab League, but these decisions did not take their share of implementation. The study came out with several recommendations, the most important of which are: The necessity of the Arab League to intervene with both the Syrian regime and the Syrian opposition in order to try to reconcile them to get out of this crisis.
