Abstract

This study aims to identify the most prominent significations and themes associated with the mention of birds in Arabic poetry and to examine the artistic, emotional, and intellectual dimensions that their use has acquired in expressing human experiences and emotions, as well as human interaction with the environment and society. The significance of the study stems from the diversity of meanings associated with birds and their close connection to human life and experiences in different environments, as well as from the emotional and intellectual attitudes reflected by their presence in poetry. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher adopted the descriptive-analytical approach by examining a variety of poetic examples, analyzing the significations of birds’ presence in them, identifying the meanings attributed to birds by poets, and exploring how they were employed to express their diverse experiences and visions. The study found that poets regarded birds as an appropriate artistic and symbolic element for expressing inner feelings and emotions and embodying a range of meanings and significations, most notably love of nature and beauty, love of the homeland and sense of belonging, the desire for freedom and liberation, pride and courage, and faith in the greatness and power of God. Birds were also employed to convey wisdom and moral lessons and to warn against falling into the traps of deceivers who disguise themselves in religious guise to deceive others. The study further demonstrates that the presence of birds in Arabic poetry was neither incidental nor merely a form of describing nature; rather, birds served as an expressive medium with multiple significations that enriched the poetic experience and deepened its human and artistic dimensions.
